Shireen Chambers (Chair since 2017)

Shireen studied forestry and soil science at Bangor University before embarking on a career overseas, working with the Government of the Bahamas to set up a new forestry department in the 1980s. She returned to the UK to work with the Central Scotland Forest and continued as a practitioner in community and urban forestry throughout the UK. She has been in her current role as Executive Director of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, since 2006. Non-executive board appointments have included Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, Forest Research, Forestry Commission’s Regional Advisory Committee for Mid-Scotland (Chair), Edinburgh Green Belt Trust and she was a member of the Independent Panel on Forestry in 2012.

Terence Jagger (Vice chair since 2017)

TJ picTerence spent his early career in business, in the UK, Australia and Italy, with Shell, American Express, Burmah Oil and Unigate.  He then joined the civil service for 15 years, including working on major privatisation and spending a year in Afghanistan.  Most recently, he was CE of Crown Agents, working across developing countries in Africa and Asia.  He has previously served as a non-executive or trustee of many organisations, including the Met Office, the Gloucestershire and the London Wildlife Trusts, and the London Library.  He is currently a board member of the London Pensions Fund Authority and a member of ACOBA and the SSRO Referrals Committee.  He has a long-standing interest in trees and forests, and in ecosystem restoration and its benefits for human societies.

Judith Twentyman (Treasurer since 2017)

Judith is a Chartered Accountant with 25 years’ experience in the financial sector having held senior roles in both the commercial sector at PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Laporte plc and in the charitable sector as Chief Financial Officer of Impetus – The Private Equity Foundation. Judith has been in her current role as Chief Operating Officer at StreetDoctors in 2016. She has an MSc from London University in Environmental Management and is firmly committed to protecting the environment and to the third sector.

Carol Mack (Trustee since 2012)

Carol Mack is the Deputy Chief Executive of the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF), the UK-wide membership association for foundations and grant-making charities. She supports TREE AID because of her long-standing personal interest in international development and climate change. Carol’s professional experience includes: advising charities on governance and charity law; national policy formulation; neighbourhood mediation; and financial trading in the private sector. Currently the Chair of the Wales Funders Forum, her past roles include senior policy advisor at the Charity Commission and serving on the Audit Committee of Victim Support.

John Collenette (Trustee since 2012)

After leaving a career in the international financial world in 2011, John completed an MSc in Development Studies and Social Anthropology at Birkbeck College, London in 2013 – more than 30 years after his original modern languages degree. He is now involved in a number of voluntary activities, in particular as Chair of Trustees of ACE Africa (UK), an organisation that supports community development work in rural Kenya and Tanzania. He is extremely interested in all aspects of sustainable community development

Annie Moreton (Trustee since 2012)

Annie has spent 12 years fundraising for Greenpeace UK. She was Marketing Director for 5 years, working on every aspect of individual giving, which constituted over 95% of total income. As a fundraising consultant, Annie has worked with over 50 charities and INGOs from very small to very large, on projects ranging from full strategic and structural review of income generation to small-scale research, portfolio development, training and mentoring. She has been a Trustee of Action on Smoking and Health, Vice Chair of ActionAid UK, and Chair of GeneWatch. She is currently Deputy Director of Individual Giving and Legacies at Save the Children UK.

Alex Rees (trustee since 2016)

alex reesAlex Rees is an international development specialist with almost twenty years of experience in the food and nutrition security sector with programmes, research, policy, and advocacy experience. In his current role with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, he actively manages and shapes new programmes, improving quality and overall success with the organisation’s resource mobilisation agenda. His prior role at Save the Children saw him lead the organisation’s substantial portfolio of programmes on food security and nutrition. Alex has had a persistent focus on improving the situation of the poorest and most marginalised people. He is delighted to be a Trustee after a MA in Environment and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies established his keen interest in how natural resources interplay with human development.

Mikko Simula (Trustee since 2016)

mikkoMikko’s background and expertise are in international business and finance. Originally from Finland, and having lived previously in the USA, Australia and China, Mikko has worked within the Offshore Wind sector in the UK since 2009. In his current role, Mikko is a Finance Director for a bank-financed offshore wind construction project. Coming originally from a country that is covered almost entirely by forests Mikko feels a special connection to trees and forests.

Trevor Reaney (Trustee since 2016)

trevorTrevor retired from his post as Clerk and Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Assembly at the end of June 2016. During a career spanning both the private and public sectors, he has served as CEO of three public sector bodies in Northern Ireland over the past 20 years. These roles have provided extensive experience in strategic leadership and corporate governance. He has been a Trustee of a national children’s charity (Buttle UK) since 2008 and currently serves as its Deputy Chair. In addition to international parliamentary development work, he is also involved with Tearfund in Rwanda.

John was appointed Chief Executive of TREE AID in June 2015. Prior to this he has worked in international development for over 20 years most recently as Programme Director with Gorta-Self Help Africa where he led the implementation of programme strategy targeting smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. John brings a strong track record in leading geographically dispersed teams to design and implement impactful programmes and growing institutional funding.

Director of Fundraising and Communications

UK Office

Marian started as Director of Fundraising and Communications in July 2011. She joined Tree Aid with experience in leading fundraising and communications with some of the UKs major charity brands, including the NSPCC and Save the Children. She also worked internationally developing fundraising in Brazil, India and Canada on behalf of Save the Children International. She won many awards for co-ordinating the Full Stop launch, including New Marketer of the Year. She is currently a trustee for Care International UK.

Tom started as Director of Operations in April 2016. He brings over 10 years of experience working in program and operational roles in both country and head office roles on projects in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Before starting with TREE AID he worked as Country Director for Save the Children in Vanuatu. Previously he has also worked with Merlin and International Rescue Committee.

Georges BAZONGO is an Agronomist and Environmentalist, with background on Rural Decentralisation and Good Governance and Agribusiness management. With 18 years’ experience, Georges build his experience in National and International Organisations like FAO/Ministry of Environment Project, ORGANIC, German NGO, Self Help Africa before to join the wonderful family of TREE AID. The areas of expertise are Sustainable agriculture and natural resource management, agroforestry, livestock (small ruminant and poultry), land tenure management, crop value chain development and smallholder’s organisational development, capacity building of community-based organisations, project/programme planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Experience on partnership development and management with Government Services, Private, Farmer Organisations and NGOs/Civil Societies.

Maurice Kone
Mali Country Manager

Maurice Kone started working with TREE AID in December 2009. Since December 2013 he has held the position of TREE AID Mali, based in Bamako with the main mission to expand the portfolio of projects and programs in Mali. Maurice has strong expertise in business support and community agroforestry. Before joining TREE AID, Maurice has worked for 16 years in the field of rural microfinance in Mali. His extensive knowledge of this sector was used to bring together forest businesses with microfinance institutions in Mali during his work on ‘Trees Enterprises villages”, which ended in 2012.

Cheru Tessema Mammo
Ethiopia Country Manager

Ethiopia Office

Cheru was appointed as Ethiopia Country Manager in June 2014 and is responsible for the development of our programme work and engagement and co-operation with local partners. He has overseen the establishment of the Ethiopia office (opened in June 2014) and is responsible for running and developing the country plan for the expansion of TREE AID’s Ethiopia programme. Cheru is an environmentalist and livelihoods development expert with more than 25 years practical experience in the sector. He has been working in environmental related, poverty-focused and livelihoods related development programmes in both governmental and non-governmental organisations. His diversified expertise and experience will be valuable input and contribute a lot to TREE AID’s interventions in Ethiopia and beyond.
