The Grains ‘n’ Greens Challenge: Will you step up to the plate?

intro

The challenge could not be simpler. Eat nothing but plants for five days and raise a shed-load of cash for us in the process!

Grains ‘n’ Greens is a fantastic way to challenge yourself, be creative and try new things in the kitchen. But it’s also a good opportunity to think about what food people live on around the world.

If you’re a veggie lover, the challenge will be a walk in the park. If you’re more of a carnivore or love a bit of dairy, brace yourself for five days of food that grows in the ground!

Either way, remember just how much of a difference you’ll be making to families in Africa.

The rules

The rules

You must live on a completely plant-based diet for five days.

That’s right – no milk in your cuppa (unless it’s something like soy or almond), no cheese on your pizza (unless it’s a dairy-free alternative) and certainly no bacon in your sandwich!

But help yourself to as many fruits, vegetables, tubers, whole grains and legumes as you can get your hands on!

It’s as simple as that! But please eat a balanced diet and keep your energy levels up. Spend what you like, eat as much as you want, and – most importantly – make sure you stay healthy.

Why plants

Why plants?

Across Africa’s drylands, meat and dairy products are extremely scarce and very expensive. For many families, the journey to the nearest market is long and the products are unaffordable when they get there.

So for many of Africa’s poorest communities, nutrients from plants mean the difference between life and death.

Trees, in particular, can be grown within the community and are a sustainable source of vital vitamins and minerals. The leaves, nuts, seeds, fruit – and even bark and roots – can be cooked up into hearty meals that keep families strong and healthy, and keep bellies full all year round.

You are changing lives

You’re changing lives.

When you fundraise for TREE AID, every penny goes towards transforming lives like Biriti’s.

Biriti lives in a small village in central Ethiopia with her three children. As a single mother with very few opportunities to work, she struggled to look after them.

Biriti wanted very much to set up her own business but when she applied to the bank for a loan, they turned her down. It was at this point that she joined a women’s savings and loans group formed by TREE AID.

She was loaned around £18, so she immediately rented four hectares of land and learnt how to grow maize to sell.

Despite starting with nothing, Biriti now earns enough money to feed her children and send them to school.

When Biriti was first left to support her children alone, she was afraid. But now she feels she has a purpose in life. She is confident she can provide a better future for her family.

Projects like our women’s savings and loans groups would not be possible without the kindness and generosity of our supporters. But Biriti’s story is also testament to her sheer determination and drive to change the lives of their children.
