Frequent Questions

These are some of the most common questions we hear in relation to leaving a gift to TREE AID.

  • What difference will leaving a gift in my Will make?

Legacy income is vital to TREE AID’s work – it makes a real difference to families right across Africa every day. However big or small, you can be sure that your gift will help communities to leave poverty behind and work towards a brighter and more sustainable future.  By leaving a gift in your Will, you’ll also be leaving a unique chain of hope in Africa, meaning that your legacy will have an impact many years into the future.

  • Why do people choose to leave a legacy to TREE AID?

Leaving a legacy in your Will enables you to keep giving to a cause you really care about. Our supporters leave legacies to TREE AID for lots of reasons, but most have a common desire to help our life-transforming work reach out to even more people in need.

  • I’m not a wealthy person; would anything I leave be helpful?

One of the great things about a will is that you can leave a small percentage rather than a specific amount. Whatever your circumstances, even a small percentage can make a huge difference. Also, it won’t be affected by inflation

  • How do I leave a gift in my Will to TREE AID?

Deciding to leave a legacy is a special gift. As such, making a Will is important as it is the only way of ensuring your wishes are followed after you die. As well as guaranteeing that your estate is used to benefit those you care about, it can include instructions such as funeral arrangements and appointing legal guardians for your children.

  • What if I need to change my will?

Your situation could change and, of course, you can change the contents of your will at any time and for any reason – regardless of what you had originally decided to leave in your will.

  • Wouldn’t it be better to help now rather than later?

We are immensely grateful to anyone who chooses to support our work however they choose to do so. It’s up to you to choose what type of gift suits you best.  We appreciate that not all of our supporters can donate throughout their lifetime and can only afford to give after their death.

  • Isn’t this a private matter?

Absolutely. We believe that the only way anyone should find out about the contents of your will during your lifetime is if you choose to tell them, and we will always respect that.  Some supporters want to tell us they have made a provision for Tree Aid in their will but others prefer not to.

  • Why do I need a Will?

a. If you don’t have a Will, your possessions may not automatically go to your partner, and the legal system will decide who receives what.
b. Having a Will is the only way you can be sure that your loved ones will be able to carry out your wishes and avoid any legal wrangles or complications.
c. A well-written Will can help you make sure your loved ones don’t pay more Inheritance Tax than they need to.
d. You can include your wishes for your funeral in your Will, for example, whether you want to be buried or cremated, and where you want the funeral to take place.
e. You can also use your Will to make a gift to a charity that’s close to your heart.

  • How will my family feel about it?

We believe in the importance of family: that’s why we don’t ask you for a specific sum of money but for a small percentage of whatever is left.

  • Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax

TREE AID is a UK registered charity and therefore gifts and bequests to us are generally exempt from Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax if you are a UK tax payer. Please seek advice from your solicitor about Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax.
