Mali

Mali is a large landlocked country that is twice the size of France. Over three-quarters of the population live on less than US$2 a day.

Much of the north of Mali is in the Sahara, and the extreme north is desert and is virtually unpopulated. TREE AID projects are in the Sahelian region to the south, where low rainfall is a real threat. In addition the rising population is putting ever increasing pressure on trees which are the main source of fuel for cooking.

70% of the Malian people live in rural areas. TREE AID is working with local project partners to support these communities through training in good land practices and bush fire management. We also support the development of local bylaws to protect existing forest and encourage tree planting.

TREE AID has been working in Mali since 1993.
