Ghana

Ghana is a West African country with a similar land area to the UK. 57% of the population lives on less than US$2 a day.

TREE AID supports projects in the north of Ghana, which is much poorere than the south. The drylands of the north have a harsher climate with only one rainy season, limiting what types and how many crops can be grown. Communities in the north are more prone to drought, and poverty makes them more vulnerable.

Women often produce charcoal which they use as an income source, but this is reducing tree cover and causing environmental degradation.

TREE AID is working with local project partners to support communities to achieve rural regeneration through increasing tree cover and providing training in techniques to improve soil and farm sustainability.

Community engagement and education is another key aspect of our work. The involvement of children and schools is important in long term sustainability as the next generation of farmers.

TREE AID has been working in Ghana since 1994
