Ethiopia is a large landlocked country in East Africa, where 85% of the people depend on subsistence farming and more than three-quarters earn less than US$2 a day.
These communities remain vulnerable to the effects of extreme weather, such as the drought in the 1980s which caused crops to fail and triggered famine.
Firewood is a resources with a cash market in a country with few employment opportunities but unsustainable cutting of trees is increasing erosion and environmental degradation.

TREE AID works with local project partners to support communities to plant trees, restore degraded land and provide more drought resistant food supplies. Improved land management and fuel-efficient stoves reduce pressure on existing resources. Compost production increases farm yields.
TREE AID has been working in Ethiopia since 1991.
